A Long History In Consulting

As alluded to above, throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to wear many hats; from designing and manufacturing product compliance test systems in the early 2000s, to helping busineses navigate complex technical and quality standards in different countries, to now working as an independent SharePoint Consultant.  One thing has remained consistent throughout my career: I love helping organisations use technology to solve real business problems and become more efficient.

From Regulatory Product Compliance To ISO Quality Systems

My background is quite varied. After completing an engineering degree, I setup my own business. Early on, I specialised in regulatory product compliance, primarily for telecommunication products.  This involved helping clients ensure their products met regulatory compliance standards worldwide. We’re talking about big names like Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Canon, Panasonic, HP, Xerox, and many others.  At one point, one of my businesses also designed and manufactured a range of telecom product compliance test systems. It was demanding work, but it showed me just how crucial good processes and precise documentation ae in bringing a product to market successfully.

Around the same time, I implemented ISO quality systems for companies in different regions around the world, which taught me a lot about structure, documentation, repeatable processes and continual improvement.  I often wished we had a better platform to store and organise documents and other data. That early insight led me to appreciate the full potential of SharePoint for managing not just documents, but also other data, regulatory obligations and workflows in a more intuitive way.

Embracing SharePoint Since 2007

I’ve been working with Microsoft SharePoint since 2007.  Whether it’s building custom intranets, document management systems, full line of business applications or handling data migration, I’m comfortable with all aspects of SharePoint.  Theming, branding, site structure – I’ve done it all.  I’m also well-versed in Power Apps, workflows, Azure integrations and SPFx customisations.

One thing I enjoy about being an independent SharePoint Consultant is the freedom to tailor everything to a client’s specific business needs.  Some people need advanced solutions that involve a lot of customisation and automation, maybe with supporting custom software. Others might need a straightforward site that’s easy on the eyes and simple for staff to use.  The process of talking through a client’s goals, timelines, and resources, and then build a plan that feels right for a client’s organisation gives me huge satisfaction.

A Practical Approach To Solutions

My focus isn’t limited to technical aspects alone. I also bring all my other business experience and lessons learned from working with a wide range of clients.  I have a focus on both functionality and usability.  After all, if people find a system difficult to use or uninviting, they tend to revert back to old habits and your brand new SharePoint environment may fall out of favour very quickly.

I’ve collaborated with organisations in many industry sectors. My background gives me an insight into working with massive global firms, but I also work with small business and charities.  I’m currently a trustee of UK based charity that working the social care sector.  This has further underscored the importance of proper data management in a not-for-profit environment.

Balancing Technology And User Needs

I place a lot of emphasis on clarity, efficiency, and collaboration.  Technology should do more  than just exist; it should actively help people do their jobs better. 

I’m always transparent about feasibility, costs, and timelines. If there’s a tricky requirement that could affect your budget, I’ll mention it up front.  Early, honest discussions prevent headaches later.  Given my experience in regulated industries, regulatory and quality requirements, I know the importance of maintaining consistent, secure processes.

In short, my objective is always to make the technology fit the specific business requirement and not the other way around.

Custom Solutions With Power Platform, Azure And SPFx

I am a software engineer by training. I’m adept at customising SharePoint sites with theming and branding.  I can build customisations and workflows using Microsoft’s Power Platform. For advanced scenarios, I can write and host custom software in Microsoft Azure. I can develop site customisations using Microsoft SPFx.  Whatever the level of customisation required, I get real satisfaction in delivering a well-crafted solution that saves people time and stress.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

If it is not already, AI will be the most significant new technology of the last 100 years. I have a keen interest in business automation and increasing business efficiency and productivity through the use of AI.  I am well positioned to advise on this eiter alongside or separately to a SharePoint engagement.
